With its mountains and abundant rainfall, Reunion Island has hundreds of waterfalls. Several are less than an hour from Saint-Denis: perfect for a half-day in nature.
Near Saint-Denis
- Niagara waterfall in Sainte-Suzanne, about 20 minutes east: easy to reach, it falls into a large pool surrounded by greenery.
- Bassin La Paix and Bassin La Mer on the Rivière des Roches (Bras-Panon and Saint-Benoît area): a short walk leads to beautiful natural pools.
A little further
- The Voile de la Mariée in the Salazie cirque: delicate falls visible from the road up to Hell-Bourg.
- Grand Galet waterfall in Langevin, in the south: a magnificent sight, to combine with a day in the wild south.
Safety
- Never approach waterfalls or swim when it is raining, even upstream: floods can be sudden and violent.
- Respect no-entry signs and trail closures.
- Rocks are slippery: good shoes are essential.
The best time
The dry season (May to October) is the safest for the pools. In the rainy season the waterfalls are more impressive, but often best admired from a distance. For more nature outings, see our hikes and day trips.
