Saint-Denis is an excellent base to explore Reunion Island: in a single day you can go from the coast to the cirques and the volcano. Here are the great nature outings within reach of the capital, from family trails to demanding hikes.
Roche Écrite, the viewpoint above Saint-Denis
The highest point of the massif overlooking the city, Roche Écrite offers, on a clear day, an exceptional view over the cirques of Mafate and Salazie. The hike starts from the heights of Saint-Denis (Le Brûlé area): a full day of walking for fit hikers. Start early, as clouds often build up by late morning.
The Salazie cirque and Hell-Bourg
The greenest of the three cirques is also the easiest to reach by car from the north of the island. On the way, the Voile de la Mariée waterfall is a must. At the end of the road, the village of Hell-Bourg, listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France”, charms visitors with its Creole houses and gardens.
Piton de la Fournaise
One of the world’s most active volcanoes can be visited in a day: lunar landscapes of the Plaine des Sables, panoramic views over the caldera from Pas de Bellecombe and, for the fittest, the hike to the crater. Access depends on volcanic activity: always check before setting off. Read our guide: Piton de la Fournaise day trip.
Maïdo, a balcony over Mafate
At over 2,000 metres, the Maïdo viewpoint offers a breathtaking view of the Mafate cirque, which can only be reached on foot. Sunrise there is spectacular, before the clouds roll in.
Cilaos and Mare à Joncs
The famously winding road to Cilaos leads to a spectacular cirque. The village, known for its hot springs and embroidery, is also the starting point for hikes up the Piton des Neiges, the highest peak in the Indian Ocean.
Before you go: our safety tips
- Check the weather and trail conditions: some routes are closed after heavy rain or a cyclone (information from the ONF forestry office and the tourist office).
- Start early: the mountains often cloud over by late morning.
- Take water, warm and waterproof clothing, sunscreen and a charged phone.
- Tell someone your route and expected return time.
