Reunion Island is known for its peaceful coexistence: people of European, African, Malagasy, Indian, Chinese and Comorian origin have shared the island for generations. In Saint-Denis, a few streets are enough to go from a mosque to a Tamil temple, from a pagoda to a cathedral.

Places to discover

  • The Noor-e-Islam Mosque, rue du Maréchal Leclerc: founded in 1905, it is considered the oldest mosque in France. Its white and green minaret is one of the city’s symbols.
  • The Kalikambal Tamil temple, on the same street: a colourful façade decorated with Hindu deities.
  • The Guan Di pagoda, place of worship of the Chinese community, in the city centre.
  • Saint-Denis Cathedral, a 19th-century building in the heart of the city.

Visiting respectfully

  • Check visiting hours and avoid prayer or ceremony times.
  • Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
  • Remove your shoes before entering the temples and the mosque.
  • Always ask before photographing people.

The great festivals

Chinese New Year, Dipavali (the Tamil festival of lights), Cavadee and the 20 December celebration of the abolition of slavery: each community celebrates its festivals, often open to all. Find the dates in our Reunion Island festivals calendar.
