A land of mixed cultures, Reunion Island lives to the rhythm of festivals from all its communities: Tamil, Chinese, Muslim, Christian, African and Malagasy. Here are the highlights of the year to help you plan your stay. Exact dates vary from year to year: check them with the tourist office before booking.

January – February: Chinese New Year and Cavadee

Chinese New Year is celebrated with lion dances, firecrackers and parades, especially in Saint-Denis. Around the same time, the Tamil community celebrates Cavadee, a religious festival with spectacular processions in several towns.

Autumn and early austral winter: festivals and markets

Many music festivals and cultural events take place depending on the year, including the Sakifo festival in Saint-Pierre, one of the Indian Ocean’s major music events. It is also a good season for hiking, with milder temperatures.

October: the Grand Raid, the “Diagonale des Fous”

This legendary ultra-trail crosses the island from coast to coast through the cirques. Runners from all over the world, a festive atmosphere along the route and a much-followed finish: it is one of Reunion’s most famous sporting events. Accommodation is in high demand at this time, so book early.

October – November: Dipavali, the festival of lights

A major Tamil festival, Dipavali celebrates the victory of light over darkness. Lamps, decorations and a large colourful parade, notably in Saint-André, draw big crowds every year.

20 December: Freedom Day (Fèt Kaf)

A public holiday on Reunion Island, 20 December commemorates the abolition of slavery in 1848. Maloya concerts, parades and gatherings take place across the island: a highlight of Reunionese culture.

December – January: the festive season in summer

On Reunion Island, Christmas falls in the middle of the austral summer: the season of lychees, beaches and family meals. It is also a busy period, with many visitors from mainland France and the Indian Ocean.
