The Barachois is the historic seafront of Saint-Denis. This is where locals come to walk, jog or enjoy a drink facing the Indian Ocean at the end of the day. A simple, free stroll, ideal for your first evening on Reunion Island.

What to see at the Barachois

  • The row of cannons pointing out to sea, a reminder of the town’s former defences.
  • The statue of Roland Garros, the aviator born in Saint-Denis who gave his name to the island’s airport.
  • The square and its large trees, with cafés and restaurants nearby.
  • The historic buildings of the lower town, including the Prefecture, the former headquarters of the French East India Company.

The best time: late afternoon

The sun sets over the sea to the west. Arrive half an hour before to enjoy the golden light, then wander up rue de Paris and its Creole houses. At weekends the atmosphere is lively and family-friendly.

Good to know

  • Swimming is not possible at the Barachois: the shore is pebbly and the sea is often rough. For swimming, head to the lagoons of the west coast (see The best beaches of the west coast).
  • The seafront is great for an early-morning jog, while it is still cool.
  • Bring a cap and water during the day: the sun is strong, even in the austral winter.
