Saint-Denis has no swimming beach: for white sand and lagoons, head to the west coast, about 45 minutes to 1 hour away depending on traffic. An easy day trip from the hotel.

Our favourite beaches

  • Boucan Canot: a light-sand beach lined with cafés, very popular at sunset.
  • L’Hermitage: the large lagoon protected by the coral reef, ideal for swimming and watching fish.
  • La Saline-les-Bains: the continuation of the lagoon, quieter and family-friendly.
  • Saint-Leu: lagoon, sea turtles (watch them without touching) and Kélonia, the turtle observatory.
  • L’Étang-Salé: a long, spectacular black volcanic sand beach.

Safety first

  • On Reunion Island, swimming is only allowed in the lagoons and in supervised or protected areas. Strictly follow flags, signs and lifeguards’ instructions.
  • Never swim outside these areas, in rough seas or murky water.
  • Do not walk on the coral: it is fragile and sharp. Water shoes are useful.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

Planning your day

Leave early to avoid traffic and enjoy the lagoon in the morning, when the sea is calmest. A car is the easiest option: the hotel offers car rental and free covered parking when you get back.
