At the end of rue de Paris, the Jardin de l’État is the great historic garden of Saint-Denis. Created in the 18th century to acclimatise plants from all over the world, it is now a much-loved place for a stroll in the shade of century-old trees.

What you will discover

  • Palms, trees and tropical plants from Asia, Africa, Madagascar and the Americas, with their names labelled.
  • The traveller’s tree, fig trees, ylang-ylang and many species used in perfumery or cooking.
  • Ponds and large lawns, perfect for a break.

The Natural History Museum

Housed in the building at the end of the garden, the museum presents the wildlife of Reunion and the Indian Ocean, including species that are now extinct. An interesting visit with family or on rainy days. Check opening hours before you go.

Our tips

  • Come in the morning, when it is cooler and the light is lovely for photos.
  • It is an ideal spot for a picnic with samosas from the market.
  • The garden combines easily with rue de Paris and the Barachois: allow half a day for all three.
