Reunion is a small island, but its terrain makes journeys longer than they look. Here is how to plan your travels from Saint-Denis.
By car: the most flexible option
- The most practical way to discover the cirques, the volcano and the beaches.
- Driving is on the right, as in mainland France (check the rules if you hold a foreign licence).
- The hotel offers car rental and free covered parking.
Roads to know
- Between Saint-Denis and the west, the coastal road runs along the sea at the foot of the cliffs; the New Coastal Road, with its long viaduct over the sea, is gradually replacing it.
- At rush hour (morning and late afternoon), roads in and out of Saint-Denis are often congested: leave early.
- Mountain roads are narrow and winding (the road to Cilaos has hundreds of bends): drive carefully and allow extra time.
Without a car
- The Car Jaune network links the island’s main towns.
- In Saint-Denis, the city bus network serves the centre and the neighbourhoods.
- Taxis are available at the airport and can be booked by reception (paid service).
- For excursions, agencies offer guided trips: see our excursions.
